Finland, Karelia Communion Books
6,976,389 records
This collection contains records from Communion books from the Karelia region (Rippikirjat/kommunionböcker), Finland, between the years 1729 and 1971. Records typically include the name of the registrant, date of birth, residence, date of death and the name of the father.

The Rippikirjat/kommunionböcker, or Communion books were church censuses that usually covered a five year time period and recorded significant statistical events, such as births, deaths, marriages, and migration. Children who were not confirmed were not recorded in the communion books, but were rather recorded in the pre-confirmation books. Once a child was confirmed, typically around the age of 15, they would then be recorded in the communion books.

Karelia is an area in Northern Europe of historical significance for Russia (including the Soviet era), Finland, and Sweden. It is currently divided between Finland and Russia. The Republic of Karelia is a federal subject of Russia formed in 1991 from the Karelian ASSR. The Karelian Isthmus belongs to the Leningrad Oblast. The Finnish side consists of parts of the regions of South Karelia, North Karelia, and Kymenlaakso.
